What Is Off Page SEO?

May 28, 2012 by Sathishkumar Varatharajan Leave a Comment

Off Page SEO refers to the optimization of your website through strategies employed outside of what can be seen on your website. This type of optimization does not rely heavily on the content of your website but on how you advertise your website. While the focus of On Page SEO is to make it relevant, Off Page SEO makes your website look popular and reliable.

How Off Page SEO Works?

Search engines judge a website’s reputation through other websites’ feedback. This means that having other sites link to you can boost your website’s rank. However, you have to make sure that these sites have high ranks so they help pull you up.

If you have low quality sites that link to you, they will likely pull your rank down. The goal is to have websites with high page ranks to recommend you. .gov, .edu and .org sites are considered by most engines to be reliable and it would be best to invest getting feedback from these sites.

It is also important not to overdo the collecting of links. Too much back-linking can look suspicious. The idea is to get your website out there through the referral of big websites and let your content do the rest. Target a few high-ranking websites and you will be able to see results soon.

It would be helpful to check these sites’ other links as well. Make sure that they do not link out to low-quality sites. If you can, you should also check the other sites that link to these sites. Checking a site’s inbound and outbound links shows the quality of the site.

How a website links to you is also important. It is to your advantage if the website provides information about your site before it links to you instead of just posting your URL. A great example is to be linked inside an article that talks about a relevant topic.

Another thing to look at is the relevance of the content of these sites to yours. It helps if both of your sites have content that relate to each other. This way, you are attracting the right crowd to your website. Getting hits from people who will not stay won’t make your site popular.

How Do You Go About Requesting Recommendations from Top-ranking Sites?

The key is to market your articles. Even if your articles are better than most, it would not matter if not many people know about it. Broadcast your content by all possible means.

The simplest example would be to send out some of your content to people who might be interested and you can ask them for feedback. These people may be people you know but ask them to critique your content. When you have passed their evaluation, you can target website owners and advertise your articles.

If you can’t get other websites to link to you, you can link to your own website yourself in forums and the like. However, don’t just haphazardly copy and paste your links anywhere. Find a thread that is talking about a relevant topic.

Participate in the discussion and then link your website as supplementary reading to your response. Your response in websites like these act like an introduction and an invitation to your site. Make sure to tell them what you have to offer but it should still be applicable to the topic that is being discussed.

Off Page SEO relies on the capability of the site owner to go out and introduce the website to other people. This is especially useful for new sites that have not yet called enough attention. Relying on the content to be detected and analyzed by search engines might take a while. Employing Off Page SEO strategies will boost popularity among internet users and it will also reflect in your page rank.
